"This may be the most powerful blog post you've written to date" said a family member I shared this with before sending...so strap in..here we go.
We've had some fun so far.
We've talked about 80's hair bands...which were awesome
We've talked about beer/sausage and nose tube feeding brides.
But I'm going to switch gears for a moment because I've recently read two books that have changed my perspective on life.
I read a ton of books. So to read two within a few weeks that have had this type of impact is not the norm.
The reason these speak to me so much is that they tie directly into what we've been talking about in our recent emails.
You see, you have the power to change your life.
Seriously...nobody is coming to save you. And because of that, it is up to you to make the change in your life. Not your wife, your husband, your children...YOU.
An in order to make that change, you have accept fact that you...and ONLY you control how you move...and what you eat.
Same goes with mindset..
Once you recognize this, you realize that you're empowered to make the change. It's a great...and liberating feeling actually.
So now you're thinking...crap...he's right. If I'm in control then it's up to me to take the next step! Sure it might be tough.
It is. If you're like me you were eating poorly your entire life (for me..37 years)
By making one small mindset shift that Pat Flynn talked about in our podcast together you CAN live the life you've always wanted.
Here is the trick...It doesn't even start with Exercise..or Nutrition. It starts with your mindset.
Stop and think about that for a moment. What self limiting beliefs are you telling yourself?
I can't exercise because of..(insert excuse here)
I have exercise induced asthma. I have my entire life. In fact I've never run under a 9:30 minute mile in my life.
I have cravings and can't control my eating
Me neither. I can still put away a bag of kettle chips if they're in front of me..stick around and I'll show you why you can't control your eating (hint: there are actual biological reasons why this is)
I don't have the support of my spouse, friends, or other
Here is a hard truth bomb..wait for it...The reason you don't is that if you change, they're going to have to confront their own truth about how they live.
Your real friends will stick by you.
Your real friends will support you and cheer you on. If they don't....you might need new friends...Sorry to be hurtful here.
We believe in you though 🙂
I don't have time
I've moved twice in the last year, started two new jobs, had twins girls.
Guess what, I'm writing this now for YOU. My team runs our popular podcast, our social media, our bFitandLive website where you can find a trainer in your area.
Not having time is an excuse.
You, me, Bill Gates...we all woke up with the same amount of time this morning. The difference is what we do with that time.
What did you do with your time this last month? Stop and really think about it.
I don't have money for a gym or a trainer
Good news..you don't need those things. Will it help if you can afford it? Yeah but it's not required
You control your Mindset
You control what you Eat
You control how you Move
To prove my point I'll reference the two books that will stay with me until the day I die....seriously
Why? Because they illustrate so powerfully what it looks like when your freedom to eat what you want is taken away.
What it looks like when you physically can't move or express your wants/desires to others
They also demonstrate the power of mindset and the incredible ability that each and every one of us has to make positive change in our life no matter how bad our circumstances seem.
And if you think you've had a bad run, I present the following stories:
Book 1 - Ghost Boy - The story of Martin Pistorious
I won't ruin this book. It should be required reading. Long story short, a normal boy falls ill as a child as his parents watch him deteriorate into a mute quadriplegic.
Doctors couldn't diagnose him and they thought he was brain dead. His only ability was the natural reflex to swallow. The doctors didn't believe that he had any conscious activity and that he was more or less brain dead living in a shell of a body.
They were wrong. He was WIDE awake and clear in his mind. Completely unable to move or communicate in any way. He saw and heard everything..and had no ability to influence anything in his life....and nobody knew it but him.
Imagine eating the same horrible food every day..and not being able to say/do anything about it.
The poor guy watched Barney the Dinosaur reruns for a decade...If that's not soul crushing I don't know what is.
Imagine not being able to move your body from the confines of a wheel chair despite the pain from being propped up against it.
He endures unspeakable horrors while in the "care" of others. I thought about putting some of them in here but I'll spare you...you'll have to get the book.
Regardless of all of this, he takes one tiny step every day. He doesn't give up, and he masters his mindset, and turns things around.
Book 2 - Unbroken - Story of Louis Zamperini
They made a movie about this story but the book is always better so I'd recommend it highly.
The cliff notes version of this is that he goes into the Air Force during WWII. His plane goes down over the pacific and along with two crew mates, is stuck on a raft for over 40 days with no food..and no water.
Think about being stuck in the baking sun on a raft with two other people and trying to survive for over 40 days as you drift aimlessly on the current hoping somebody will see you while you beat off sharks with an oar.
I won't spoil how it is that they survived but if the story stopped here, it would have been amazing enough.
Then...they get found......by a Japanese war cruiser. They're then taken to a POW camp in some of the harshest physical and mental conditions would couldn't even make up.
Again, the power of hope, resilience, and mindset is consistent throughout the book. Survival becomes an hourly thought.
I won't ruin the ending for you but this book should be a must read.
If you're still reading this, I hope you've taken something away from it. Realize that you're more powerful than you know. The human spirit as well as the physical body is incredibly resilient.
In both of these stories, neither would have survived unless they believed in themselves and their ability to improve their situation despite conditions that 99.99% of people will ever experience.
You have the power to make the change in your life that you want....so start now
